The concept for TRX was born in the Navy Seal’s.

Serving the downtown Syracuse community, we own a building of about 5,500 square feet that stands 3 blocks from the original building we occupied. We’re very history-focused here and love to draw awareness to the rich cultural stamp our family has had on the town; my great grandfather’s antique truck, which he used to deliver watch repairs at the turn of the century, is prominently featured in our store and a city park across the street was recently named M. LempPark” ~ Don Lemp

La Sirena is the latest release from Miami Cigar Co., handcrafted in Nicaragua by the greatest cigar maker today, Don “Pepin” Garcia. Fitness Trends for 2012 – What’s HOT and What’s NOT

Written By: admin - Jan• 23•12

I was recently asked by Oswego County Business Magazine to share my thoughts on fitness trends for the upcoming year.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

What’s Hot

  1. Strength training. Always in the top 5 trends, strength training is what most health club goers think of when they think of gyms.
  2. Fitness programs for older adults. The Baby Boomers just aren’t getting any younger.
  3. Personal training. This is one of the fastest growing job markets
  4. Group personal training. Not everyone can afford 1 on 1 personal training. Group training is a great way to get professional assistance at a reduced rate.
  5. Zumba and other dance workouts. Aerobics classes wrapped up in a Latin beat, VERY popular right now!
  6. Yoga. Still a top contender with lots of styles to choose from.
  7. Health Programming in the Worksite. Worksite health programs are becoming big business as the cost of health insurance continues to climb and insurers force businesses to institute these programs or face higher premiums.
  8. Boot Camp. Many programs are based on military boot camp training. An advantage of a bootcamp is that the group dynamic will often help motivate the participants.
  9. Outdoor Activities. Look out for an explosion of people on your favorite bike, hike or running path as people get out and get it done in the coming year.
  10. Spinning (Indoor Cycling). Like a wheel has no end we just can’t stop Spinning, and it continues to be one of the most popular forms of group fitness. .
  11. Wellness Coaching. Focusing on behavior change and goal setting,
  12. Physician Referrals. An example of how fitness is slowly being integrated into the healthcare system.

What’s Not

Unfortunately not every trend sticks around forever. According to ACSM, these fitness “hots” are now fitness “nots”:

  • Pilates – Who knew! Still very popular at my club though.
  • Stability Ball and Balance Training - ex. Bosu
  • Un-monitored Fitness Facilities – ex. Snap Fitness

Do you know what your limits are?

Written By: admin - Jan• 19•12

One of our members forwarded  this article in the New York Times to me about working out beyond your limits.

“People think a good workout is, ‘I am in a pile of sweat and puking,’ ” said William Kraemer, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut. But if that happens, he said, “it means you went much too quickly, and your body just can’t meet its demands.”

As the article points out, there is definitely a balance…if you work out too little you won’t see results, but over training can lead to exhaustion, depression, and a decline in results.

Bored with Your Work Out Routine?

Written By: admin - Jan• 16•12

In my presentation at the Natur-Tyme seminar last week, one of the strategies I mentioned was finding an exercise you enjoy.

If you don’t love going to the gym, find an alternative!

If you’re the outdoorsy type, how about snowshoeing, cross country skiing, or ice skating? Be sure to dress in layers, protect your hands and feet and wear reflective clothing if you’re out after dark.

If  being out in the cold is not your cup of tea, try breaking up your routine. How about a fun new class, like zumba or kickboxing?  Martial arts, yoga, or fencing could help break up your time on the treadmill.

Have you checked our Pilates reformer yet? Here’s a quick clip of Phyllis demonstrating it to one of our members.

Don’t forget dance classes – you can salsa, merengue or swing your way to a new physique.

New equipment, like kettle balls (we just got them in at Personal Fitness!) or resistance bands might be just the thing to keep boredom from setting in.

If you’re not a fan of the gym, or just need a little spice in your routine, there are all kinds of ways to work physical activity into your daily routine – AND have fun doing it.

4 Ways to Build Accountability into Your Routine

Written By: admin - Jan• 14•12

Thanks to everyone who came out for my seminar “Transforming your Body Through Exercise” on Wednesday! I covered a variety of strategies, but here’s a quick clip if you missed it.

Forcing yourself to be accountable, whether it’s to a personal trainer or just to your own journal is an awesome strategy to have in your arsenal when you’re trying to get fit and healthy. Here are some tips to help build accountability into your routine:

  1. JOURNAL – Write down everything you eat. It’s super easy to “forget” the cookie you snatch as you fly through the kitchen, or the chips you’re mindlessly munching watching TV. You might start to see patterns – stress at work makes you crave salty snacks, or eating certain foods make you feel sluggish. Log in your work outs too – seeing how great you feel after a good work out will help encourage you next time you’re feeling like you want to skip it.
  2. APPS – The techy version of the journal. Install an app on your smart phone to help you keep track of calories, workouts and progress. For a list of Shape Magazine’s best free apps for losing weight, go HERE. Mashable‘s list is HERE.
  3. WORK OUT PARTNER -  Enlist a supportive friend and arrange to meet on a regular basis to work out. Knowing someone is expecting you to be there will make it harder to bail on your work out.
  4. PERSONAL TRAINER – Hiring a personal trainer to help you set goals and keep you on track and motivated might be just what you need to reach your fitness objectives.

What are YOUR tricks for keeping yourself accountable?
